Clemency, Tolerance and Gentleness

Filed under: Hadith — by Fai & Sya @ 1:22 pm

Allah The Exalted, says:

“The good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. Repel (the evil) with one which is better (i.e. Allah orders the faithful believers to be patient at the time of anger, and to excuse those who treat them badly) then verily he, between whom and you there was enmity, (will become) as though he was a close friend. But none is granted it (the above quality) except those who are patient – and none is granted it except the owner of the great portion (of happiness in the Hereafter, i.e. Jannah and of a high moral character in this world).” [41:34,35]

“And verily, whosoever shows patience and forgives that would truly be from the things recommended by Allah.” [42:43]

Abu Dharr r.a. reported: The Prophet SAW said, “Allah, the Almighty, says: ‘Whosoever does a good deed, will have (reward) ten times like it and I add more; and whosoever does an evil, will have the punishment like it or I will forgive (him); and whosoever approaches Me by one span, I will approach him by one cubit; and whosoever approaches Me by one cubit, I approach him by one fathom, and whosoever comes to Me walking, I go to him running; and whosoever meets Me with earth-load of sins without associating with Me, I meet him with forgiveness like that.’” [Muslim]

~For His Slaves and The Efforts For Its Achievement~

Abu Hurairah r.a. reported:  Messenger of Allah SAW said, “Allah, the Exalted, has said: ‘I will declare war against him who treats with hostility a pious worshipper of Mine. And the most beloved thing with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (voluntary prayers or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory) until I love him, (so much so that) I become his hearing with which he hears, and his sight with which he sees, and his hands with which he strikes, and his leg with which he walks; and if he ask Me something, I will surely give him, and if he seeks My Protection (refuge), I will surely protect him.’” [Al-Bukhari]

JiNN(Demons)…

Filed under: Myst — by Fai & Sya @ 11:04 am

The Jinns are intelligent living beings who have been exposed to divine revelations containing both commands and prohibitions, and are thereby eligible for either reward or punishment in the next life. Since the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w was also sent to them, it is therefore obligatory for Muslims to treat them as they would treat another human being with regard to commanding the good and prohibiting the evil. The Jinn should be invited to submit to Allah just as Allah ordained that His Messenger s.a.w invite mankind to submit, and as the Prophet s.a.w invited them. Muslims should also admonish and treat the Jinn in the same way they would treat humans who break the laws of God. That is, they should repel the tyranny of the Jinn by employing the same methods which repel the tyranny of men.

The occasional possession of man by the Jinn may be due to sensual desires on the part of the Jinn, capricious whims, or even love, just as it may be among humans. Jinns and humans may also have intercourse with each other and beget children.[1]
This is a frequent occurence which is well known to many. Muslim legal scholars have discussed it and prohibited it. Most legists have opposed marriage with the Jinn. However, possession is most often a result of Jinns being angry because some wrong has been done to them and thus it is to them a punishment for those who wronged them. For example, when humans accidentally harm or hurt them by urinating on them, by pouring hot water on them, or by killing some of them, the Jinn think that they have been intentionally harmed. Though humans may not realize what they have done, the Jinns are by nature very ignorant, harsh and volatile in their behaviour, so they may have vengefully punish humans much more than they actually deserve. Demonic possessions sometimes also accurs as a result of horseplay, jest or plain evil on the part of the Jinn just as evil and mischief occurs among humans for similar reasons.

In the first case where posessions is due to lewdness on the part of the Jinn, even with the consent of the human partner, it is as forbidden by Allah as it is among humans.

Without the possessed human’s consent it becomes a grave case of atrocity and oppression. In such cases, the Jinn ahould be addressed and informed that their acts are either abominable and prohibited, or vile and tyrannical, so that evidence may be brought against them on the Day of Judgement and they be made aware that they have broken the laws of Allah and His Prophet whom He sent to both worlds; that of man and that of the Jinn.

In cases of the second order, wherein the human was unaware that he harmed a Jinn, the Jinn should be addressed and informed that the human’s act was unintentional and as such does not deserve a punishment. If it took place in the man’s house or possession, the Jinn should be informed that the house and property belong to the man and as such he is permitted to use them as he pleases in allowable ways. The Jinn should also be told that they do not have the right to inhabit human property without permission of the occupants. They only have the right to dwell in places not occupied by humans like abandoned buildings and open country. Consequently, the Jinn can most often be found in abandoned settlements, the open desert or open fields. They also occupy places of impurity like toilets, garbage – dumps, and graveyards. Mystic masters who perform satanic feats often retreat to such places where devils most often reside.

The deviant ascetics and heretics devoted prayer who experience illuminations and visions, usually retreat to locations frequented by the devils in which Salaah has been prohibited. They choose such places because the devils visit them there and communicate with them in the same way that they communicate with magicians and fortunetellers. The Jinn also enter idols, speak to those who worship the idols and fulfil some of their needs. They often help star-worshippers when they perform acts of worship which the Jinn consider suitable, like singing praises to idols representing the sun, moon and the planets, dressing the idols in luxurious garments, and burning incense in their presence etc. The devils may appear to these servants of theirs in forms which humans mistakenly identify as heavenly spirits and the devils may fulfil some of their requests by killing some of their enemies, making others sick, attracting someone whom they desire, or bringing them some wealth. However, the harm they receive from such service is often many many times greater than the benefit.

Many of those who utilize the Jinn in these ways claim that Prophet Sulaymaan used the Jinn in the same manner for the same purpose. More than one of the early scholars have mentioned that when Sulaymaan died, the devils wrote a book on magic filled with acts of disbelief and put them under his chair. When the books were discovered, the devils then claimed that Sulaymaan used to use the Jinn by these methods. As a result, some Christians and Jews have falsely discredited Prophet Sulaymaan. Others claimed that if magic were not permissible, Sulaymaan would not have practised it. Both groups went astray, one by debasing Prophet Sulaymaan and the other by practising magic. Consequently, Almighty Allah revealed the following verse:

“When a messenger from Allah came to them confirming what was revealed to them, a group of those given the scripture cast the book behind their backs as if they did not know about it. They followed what the devils claimed about Sulaymaan’s dominion. However, Sulaymaan did not disbelieve, but the devils did by teaching men magic and what was revealed to the two angels Haaroot and Maaroot in Babylon. Though neither of them taught anyone without first saying, ‘We are only a trial, so do not commit disbelief,’ they learned from them means to separate a man from his wife. But, they could not harm anyone with it except by Allah’s will. They learned what would harm themselves and not what would benefit them, though they knew that buyers of (magic) would have no share in the happiness of the next life. They sold their souls for an evil price if only they knew.” [Al Baqarah 2:101-102]

[[[ BiTeS: Other than medicine, the soul has a greater effect on the body than medicinal remedies. The Jinn most certainly do have an effect on humans according to the Prophet's s.a.w in the following authentic narration,

"Verily Satan flows in the blood stream of Adam's descendents."

For in the blood is the ether known to doctors as the "animal soul" which is emitted by the heart and which moves throughout the body giving it life.

**The medical fields of psychotherapy, psychiatry and psychology all testify to the importance of the soul in relationship to medicines which treat only in the body. ]]]

ExorCiSm…

The fundamental principle on the basis of which this subject should be understood is that it may be permissible, recommended, or even compulsory to defend or aid one who is possessed, because helping the oppressed is a duty according to one’s ability.

Allah’s Messenger s.a.w said,

“Help your brother whether he is the oppresor or the oppressed.” Anas asked,”Oh Messenger of Allah! I would help him if he is oppressed, but how can i help him when he is the oppressor?” He replied, “By preventing him from oppression you are helping him.”

Help should be justly rendered according to the method prescribed by Allah and His Messenger. For example, Islamically based prayers, words and phrases should only be used in the way they were used by the Prophet s.a.w and his companions. When commanding the Jinn to righteousness and prohibiting it from evil, it should be done in the same way that man is ordered and forbidden. Whatever is allowable in the case of humans is also allowable in the case of Jinns. For example, repelling Jinns might require scolding, threatening and even evoking God’s curse.
In narration from Abu ad-Darda in Sahih Muslim he said, Allah’s Messenger s.a.w stood up (in prayer) and we heard him say, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from you.’ Then he said thrice,’I curse you by Allah’s curse’ and he reached out his hands as if he was catching something. When he finished praying, we asked him,’Oh messenger of Allah! We heard you say something in your Salaah which we have never heard you say before and we saw you stretched your arm out.’ He said,’Verily, Allah’s enemy, Iblees brought a fiery torch and tried to thrust it in my face, so i said three times,’I seek refuge in Allah from you.’ Then i said thrice,’I curse you by Allah’s perfect curse.’ But he did not back off, so i caught a hold of him, and – by Allah – if it were not our brother Sulaymaan’s prayer, he would have been tied up for the children of Madinah to play with.

*In Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet s.a.w said, ‘Verily the devil appeared before me and launched an attack on me in order to break my Salaah, but Allah gave me mastery over him and i choked him. I intended to tie him to a post until the morning so you could see him, but i remembered my brother Sulaymaan’s prayer,’My Lord forgive me and grant me sovereignity not allowed to anyone after me.’

[[[ BiTeS: The Black Dog is a Devil among dogs and Jinn take its form often, as well as that of Black cats, because Black rallies satanic forces more readily than any other colour and it contains the power of heat. ]]]

***Info: If the possessing demon is an ‘Ifreet’ among Jinns and the exorcist is weak, it could harm him. Consequently, he should shield himself by the recitaion of prayers seeking refuge in Allah, the Mu’awwadhataan, the Ayatul Qursi; by making Salaah and supplications and other similar things which streghthen faith and put aside sins by which the evil Jinn may gain control over him. Such a person is a soldier of Allah (Mujahid fi Sabilillah) and exorcism is among the greatest form of Jihad, so he should beware not to help his enemy to overcome him by his own sins. If the circumstances is beyond his ability, “Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity”, so he should not exposed himself to tribulations by taking on what he is unable to handle.
Among the greatest weapons which may be used to exorcise the Jinn is Ayatul Qursi, as confirmed in Sahih al-Bukhari.

Besides that, the countless many who have experience in this field unanimously confirm the incredible effectiveness of this verse in warding off devils and breaking their spells. If this verse is sincerely recited over them, it will drive away the devils and neutralize their illusions. It will also disrupt the Satanic visions and devil-aided super natural feats performed by humans.

The Muslim Woman and Her Husband

Filed under: Ideal Muslimah — by Fai & Sya @ 2:04 am

In Islam, marriage is a blessed contract between a man and a woman, in which each becomes “permitted” to the other, and they begin the long journey of life in a spirit of love, co-operation, harmony and tolerance, where each feels at ease with the other, and finds tranquility, contentment and comfort in the company of the other. The Qur’an has described this relationship between men and women, which brings love, harmony, trust and compassion, in the most moving and eloquent terms:

“And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your hearts…” (Qur’an 30:21)

This is the strongest of bonds, in which Allah SWT unites two Muslim partners, who come together on the basis of love, understanding, co-operation and mutual advice, and establish a Muslim family in which children will live and grow up, and they will develop a good character and behaviour taught by Islam. The Muslim family is the strongest component of a Muslim society when its members are productive and constructive, helping and encouraging one another to be good and righteous, and competing with one another in good works.

The righteous woman is a pillar, cornerstone and foundation of the Muslim family. She is seen as the greatest joy in a man’s life, as the Prophet SAW said:

“This world is just temporary conveniences, and the best comfort in this world is a righteous woman.”

A righteous woman is the greatest blessing that Allah can give to a man, for with her he can find comfort and rest after the exhausting struggle of earning a living. With his wife, he can find incomparable tranquility and pleasure.

How can a woman be the best comfort in this world? How can she be a successful woman, true to her own feminity, and honoured and loved? This is what will be explained as you read on…

SHE CHOOSES A GOOD HUSBAND

One of the ways i which Islam has honoured woman is by giving her the right to choose her husband. Her parents have no right to force her to marry someone she dislikes. The Muslim woman knows this right, but she does not reject the advice and guidance of her parents when a potential suitor comes along, because they have her best interests at heart. At the same time, she does not forego this right because of her father’s wishes that may make him force his daughter into a marriage with someone she dislikes.

Islam does not want to impose an unbearable burden on women by forcing them to marry a man they dislike, because it wants marriages to be successful, based on compatibility between the partners; there should be common ground between them in terms of physical looks, attitudes, habits, inclinations and aspirations. If something goes wrong, and the woman feels that she cannot love her husband sincerely, and fears that she may commit the sin of disobeying and opposing the husband whom she does not love, then she may ask for a divorce.

The Muslim woman who understands the teachings of her religion has wise and correct standards when it comes to choosing a husband. She does not concern herself just with good looks, high status, a luxurious lifestyle or any of the other things that usually attract women. She looks into his level of religious commitment and his attitude and behaviour, because these are the pillars of a successful marriage, and the best features of a husband. Islamic teaching indicates the importance of these qualities in a potential husband, as Islam obliges a woman to accept the proposal of anyone who has these qualities, lest fitnah and corruption become widespread in society:

“If there comes to you one with whose religion and attitude you are satisfied, then give your daughter to him in marriage, for if you do not do so, fitnah and mischief will become widespread on earth.”

Just as the true Muslim young man will not be attracted to the pretty girls who have grown up in a bad environment, so the Muslim young woman who is guided by her religion will not be attracted to ‘playboy’ types, no matter how handsome they may be. Rather, she will be attracted to the serious, educated, believing man who is clean-living and pure of heart, whose behaviour is good and whose understanding of religion is sound.

As Allah SWT has said:

“Women impure are for men impure, and men impure for women impure…” (Qur’an 24:26)

This does not mean that the Muslim woman should completely ignore the matter of physical appearance, and put up with unattractiveness or ugliness. It is her right – as stated above – to marry a man for whom her heart may be filled with love, and who is pleasing to her both in his appearance and in his conduct.

The Muslim woman knows that the man has the right of qiwaamah over her, as the Qur’an says:

“Men are the protectors and maintainers (qawwaamoon) 0f women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means…” (Qur’an 4:34)

Hence, she wants to marry a man of whose qiwaamah over her she will feel proud, one whom she will be happy to marry and never regret it. She wants a man who will take her hand in his and set out to fulfil their life’s mission of establishing a Muslim family and raising a new generation of intelligent and caring children, in an atmosphere of love and harmony, which will not be impeded by conflicting attitudes or religious differences. Believing men and women are supposed to walk side-by-side in the journey of life, which is a serious matter for the believer, so that they may fulfil the great mission with which Allah SWT has entrusted mankind, men and women alike, as the Qur’an says:

“For Muslim men and women-for believing men and women, for devout men and women, for men and women who are patient and constant, for men and women who humble themselves, for men and women who give in charity, for men and women who guard their chastity, and for men and women who engage much in Allah’s praise-for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and great reward.” (Qur’an 33:35)

SHE IS OBEDIENT TO HER HUSBAND AND SHOWS HIM RESPECT

The true Muslim woman is always obedient to her husband, provided that no sin is involved. She is respectful towards him and is always eager to please him and make him happy.

The true Muslim woman devotes herself to taking care of her house and husband. She knows her husband’s rights over her, and how great they are, as was confirmed by the Prophet’s words:

“No human being is permitted to prostrate to another, but if this were permitted I would have ordered wives to prostrates to their husbands, because of the greatness of the rights they have over them.”

Bukhari and Muslim report from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet SAW said:

“If a man calls his wife to his bed and she does not come, and he goes to sleep angry with her, the angels will curse her until the morning.”

She checks her CUSTOMS and HABITS against Islamic Standards

Filed under: Ideal Muslimah — by Fai & Sya @ 12:44 am

The Muslim woman who has insight into the rulings of Islam does not accept every tradition and customs that is widely accepted by others, for there may be customs that are derived from ancient or modern jaahiliyah (pre-Islamic) traditions which go against Islam. These are unacceptable to the Muslim woman, even if everybody else accepts them unanimaously.

The Muslim woman does not decorate her house with statues or pictures (of animate objects), neither does she keep a dog at home, unless it is a guard dog, because the Prophet SAW has forbidden all of that. The saheeh hadiths on this matter are very emphatic in their prohibition, and there is no room for prevarication or excuses.

Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet SAW said:

“Those who make these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and will be told: ‘Give life to that which you have created.’ “

Aa’ishah r.a. said:

“The Messenger of Allah returned from a journey, and I had covered a small window with a curtain that had images on it. When the Messenger of Allah saw it, his face changed colour (with anger) and he said, ‘O’ ‘Aa’ishah! Those who will be the most severely punished by Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be those who imitated the creation of Allah.’ She said: ‘So we cut it up and made one or two pillows from it.’ “

‘Aa’ishah r.a. said:

“Jibreel promised to come to the Prophet at a certain time. That time came and went, and he did not come. The Prophet was holding a stick in his hand, which he threw aside, saying, ‘Allah does not break His promise and neither do His Messengers.’ Then he turned around and saw a puppy underneath his bed. He said, ‘When did this dog get in?’ I said, ‘By Allah, I did not even notice it.’ He gave orders that it should be taken out, and it was removed. Then Jibreel came to him, and the Messenger of Allah said, ‘You promised to come and I was waiting for you, but you did not come.’ He said,’The dog that was in your house prevented me. We do not enter a house where there is a dog or an image.’ “

Islam brought the doctrine of Tawheed (Islamic Monotheism), and destroyed the statues of shirk (polytheism) and jaahiliyah (pre-Islamic period-time of ignorance) fifteen hundred years ago. It will not permit these graven images to come back into the lives of Muslim men and women, whether it be in the name of commemorating a leader, honouring an artist or glorifying a scientist, poet or writer. The Islamic society is a monotheistic society where glorification, sanctification and veneration are only for Allah SWT. So there is no room in the Islamic society for these statues and images.

As for keeping a dog is concerned, there is nothing wrong with that if the dog is kept for hunting or farming purposes, as in teh hadith of Umar r.a., who said:”I heard the Messenger of Allah say:

‘Whoever keeps a dog, unless it is a dog for hunting or herding livestock, his reward will decrease by two qiraats every day.’”

The Muslim woman who understands the teachings of Islam does not eat or drink from vessels of gold or silver, no matter how rich she may be or how luxurious a life she may enjoy, because to do so is haraam according to Islam. We find this prohibition in a number of definitive, saheeh hadiths.

According to a report given by Muslim, the Prophet SAW said:

“Whoever eats or drinks from vessels of gold or silver, is as if he is throwing Hell-fire into his stomach.”

The alert Muslim woman, no matter where she lives, examines every custom that is followed in her society and measures it against the rulings, values and principles of Islam. Whatever is compatible with Islam, she accepts, but whatever contradicts Islam, she rejects outright, whether it is a custom relating to betrothal and marriage, or in family or social life. What matters is whether the custom is compatible with Islam, not how widely it is spread among people.

Cheerful Countenance

Filed under: Ideal Muslimah — by Fai & Sya @ 10:06 pm

It is clear to the Muslim woman that one of the most important factors in her success both in her private life with her husband and in her social life in general, is that she should be of cheerful countenance, smiling often and overflowing with warmth. All of this will endear her to people and open their hearts to her. It is also the good attitude, positive personality and physical attractiveness encouraged by Islam.

Muslim reported that the Prophet SAW said:

“Do not think little of any good deed, even if it is just meeting your brother with a cheerful countenance.”

The Prophet SAW taught that the Muslim should smile at his brother, and he never met any of his Sahaabah without smiling at them, as is reported on the hadith of the great Sahaabi Jareer ibn Abdullah, who said:

“The Prophet never refused to see me, after i embraced Islam, and he never saw me without smiling at me.”

The Muslim woman who is cheerful and smiles a lot brings joy to her husband’s heart, which increases his love and respect for her. This is also the attitude which she brings to the social circle of women with whom she mixes: nothing spreads love and affection in a community like a smiling face and a happy and content soul. These are the characteristics which are most befitting to the gentle, polite Muslim woman who seeks to call others to Islam, because it is through these attitudes that she will be able to reach people’s hearts.

Over & over again >>> Read in awe…

The Man…you have to fall in love with…
The Encyclopedia Brittanica says that “Mohammad is the most successful of all Prophets and religious personalities”.

But the success was not the result of mere accident. It was not a hit of fortune. It was a recognition of fact that he was found to be true metal by his contemporaries. It was the result of his admirable and all compelling personality.

The personality of Mohammad! It is most difficult to get into the truth of it. Only a glimpse of it I can catch. What a dramatic succession of picturesque scenes. There is Mohammad the Prophet, there is Mohammad the General; Mohammad the King; Mohammad the Warrior; Mohammad the Businessman; Mohammad the Preacher; Mohammad the Philosopher; Mohammad the Statesman; Mohammad the Orator; Mohammad the reformer; Mohammad the Refuge of orphans; Mohammad the Protector of slaves; Mohammad the Emancipator of women; Mohammad the Law-giver; Mohammad the Judge; Mohammad the Saint.

And in all these magnificent roles, in all these departments of human activities, he is like, a hero..

Orphanhood is extreme of helplessness and his life upon this earth began with it; Kingship is the height of the material power and it ended with it. From an orphan boy to a persecuted refugee and then to an overlord, spiritual as well as temporal, of a whole nation and Arbiter of its destinies, with all its trials and temptations, with all its vicissitudes and changes, its lights and shades, its up and downs, its terror and splendor, he has stood the fire of the world and came out unscathed to serve as a model in every face of life. His achievements are not limited to one aspect of life, but cover the whole field of human conditions.

If for instance, greatness consist in the purification of a nation, steeped in barbarism and immersed in absolute moral darkness, that dynamic personality who has transformed, refined and uplifted an entire nation, sunk low as the Arabs were, and made them the torch-bearer of civilization and learning, has every claim to greatness. If greatness lies in unifying the discordant elements of society by ties of brotherhood and charity, the prophet of the desert has got every title to this distinction. If greatness consists in reforming those warped in degrading and blind superstition and pernicious practices of every kind, the prophet of Islam has wiped out superstitions and irrational fear from the hearts of millions. If it lies in displaying high morals, Mohammad has been admitted by friend and foe as Al Amin, or the faithful. If a conqueror is a great man, here is a person who rose from helpless orphan and an humble creature to be the ruler of Arabia, the equal to Chosroes and Caesars, one who founded great empire that has survived all these 14 centuries. If the devotion that a leader commands is the criterion of greatness, the prophet’s name even today exerts a magic charm over millions of souls, spread all over the world.

He had not studied philosophy in the school of Athens of Rome, Persia, India, or China. Yet, He could proclaim the highest truths of eternal value to mankind. Illiterate himself, he could yet speak with an eloquence and fervor which moved men to tears, to tears of ecstasy. Born an orphan blessed with no worldly goods, he was loved by all. He had studied at no military academy; yet he could organize his forces against tremendous odds and gained victories through the moral forces which he marshaled. Gifted men with genius for preaching are rare. Descartes included the perfect preacher among the rarest kind in the world. Hitler in his Mein Kamp has expressed a similar view. He says “A great theorist is seldom a great leader. An Agitator is more likely to posses these qualities. He will always be a great leader. For leadership means ability to move masses of men. The talents to produce ideas has nothing in common with capacity for leadership.” “But”, he says, “The Union of theorists, organizer and leader in one man, is the rarest phenomenon on this earth; Therein consists greatness.”

In the person of the Prophet of Islam the world has seen this rarest phenomenon walking on the earth, walking in flesh and blood.

And more wonderful still is what the reverend Bosworth Smith remarks, “Head of the state as well as the Church, he was Caesar and Pope in one; but, he was pope without the pope’s claims, and Caesar without the legions of Caesar, without an standing army, without a bodyguard, without a palace, without a fixed revenue. If ever any man had the right to say that he ruled by a right divine It was Mohammad, for he had all the power without instruments and without its support. He cared not for dressing of power. The simplicity of his private life was in keeping with his public life.”

After the fall of Mecca, more than one million square miles of land lay at his feet, Lord of Arabia, he mended his own shoes and coarse woolen garments, milked the goats, swept the hearth, kindled the fire and attended the other menial offices of the family. The entire town of Medina where he lived grew wealthy in the later days of his life. Everywhere there was gold and silver in plenty and yet in those days of prosperity many weeks would elapse without a fire being kindled in the hearth of the king of Arabia, His food being dates and water. His family would go hungry many nights successively because they could not get anything to eat in the evening. He slept on no soften bed but on a palm mat, after a long busy day to spend most of his night in prayer, often bursting with tears before his creator to grant him strength to discharge his duties. As the reports go, his voice would get choked with weeping and it would appear as if a cooking pot was on fire and boiling had commenced. On the very day of his death his only assets were few coins a part of which went to satisfy a debt and rest was given to a needy person who came to his house for charity. The clothes in which he breathed his last had many patches. The house from where light had spread to the world was in darkness because there was no oil in the lamp.

Circumstances changed, but the prophet of God did not. In victory or in defeat, in power or in adversity, in affluence or in indigence, he is the same man, disclosed the same character. Like all the ways and laws of God, Prophets of God are unchangeable.

An honest man, as the saying goes, is the noblest work of God, Mohammad was more than honest. He was human to the marrow of his bones. Human sympathy, human love was the music of his soul. To serve man, to elevate man, to purify man, to educate man, in a word to humanize man-this was the object of his mission, the be-all and end all of his life. In thought, in word, in action he had the good of humanity as his sole inspiration, his sole guiding principle.

He was most unostentatious and selfless to the core. What were the titles he assumed? Only true servant of God and His Messenger. Servant first, and then a messenger. A Messenger and prophet like many other prophets in every part of the world, some known to you, many not known to you. If one does not believe in any of these truths one ceases to be a Muslim. It is an article of faith.

Muhammad changed the whole strategy of the Battlefield
But in pure self-defense, after repeated efforts of conciliation had utterly failed, circumstances dragged him into the battlefield. But the prophet of Islam changed the whole strategy of the battlefield. The total number of casualties in all the wars that took place during his lifetime when the whole Arabian Peninsula came under his banner, does not exceed a few hundreds in all. But even on the battlefield he taught the Arab barbarians to pray, to pray not individually, but in congregation to God the Almighty. During the dust and storm of warfare whenever the time for prayer came, and it comes five times a every day, the congregation prayer had not to be postponed even on the battlefield.(**May God forgive us…How many prayers haf we been missin for minor matters, excuses n conditions? **Qadha’ only permissible when we sleep or forget) A party had to be engaged in bowing their heads before God while other was engaged with the enemy. After finishing the prayers, the two parties had to exchange their positions. To the Arabs, who would fight for forty years on the slight provocation that a camel belonging to the guest of one tribe had strayed into the grazing land belonging to other tribe and both sides had fought till they lost 70,000 lives in all; threatening the extinction of both the tribes to such furious Arabs, the Prophet of Islam taught self-control and discipline to the extent of praying even on the battlefield. In an aged of barbarism, the Battlefield itself was humanized and strict instructions were issued not to cheat, not to break trust, not to mutilate, not to kill a child or woman or an old man, not to hew down date palm nor burn it, not to cut a fruit tree, not to molest any person engaged in worship. His own treatment with his bitterest enemies is the noblest example for his followers. At the conquest of Mecca, he stood at the zenith of his power. The city which had refused to listen to his mission, which had tortured him and his followers, which had driven him and his people into exile and which had unrelentingly persecuted and boycotted him even when he had taken refuge in a place more than 200 miles away, that city now lay at his feet. By the laws of war he could have justly avenged all the cruelties inflicted on him and his people. But what treatment did he accord to them? Mohammad’s heart flowed with affection and he declared, “This day, there is no REPROOF against you and you are all free.” “This day” he proclaimed, “I trample under my feet all distinctions between man and man, all hatred between man and man.”

Universal Brotherhood
This was one of the chief objects why he permitted war in self defense, that is to unite human beings. And when once this object was achieved, even his worst enemies were pardoned. Even those who killed his beloved uncle, Hamzah, mangled his body, ripped it open, even chewed a piece of his liver.

The principles of universal brotherhood and doctrine of the equality of mankind which he proclaimed represents one very great contribution of Mohammad to the social uplift of humanity. All great religions have preached the same doctrine but the prophet of Islam had put this theory into actual practice and its value will be fully recognized, perhaps centuries hence, when international consciousness being awakened, racial prejudices may disappear and greater brotherhood of humanity come into existence.

Miss. Sarojini Naidu speaking about this aspect of Islam says, “It was the first religion that preached and practiced democracy; for in the mosque, when the minaret is sounded and the worshipers are gathered together, the democracy of Islam is embodied five times a day when the peasant and the king kneel side by side and proclaim, God alone is great.” The great poetess of India continues, “I have been struck over and over again by this indivisible unity of Islam that makes a man instinctively a brother. When you meet an Egyptian, an Algerian and Indian and a Turk in London, it matters not that Egypt is the motherland of one and India is the motherland of another.”

Mahatma Gandhi, in his inimitable style, says “Some one has said that Europeans in South Africa dread the advent Islam — Islam that civilized Spain, Islam that took the torch light to Morocco and preached to the world the Gospel of brotherhood. The Europeans of South Africa dread the Advent of Islam. They may claim equality with the white races. They may well dread it, if brotherhood is a sin. If it is equality of colored races then their dread is well founded.”

Every year, during the Haj, the world witnesses the wonderful spectacle of this international Exhibition of Islam in leveling all distinctions of race, color and rank. Not only the Europeans, the African, the Arabian, the Persian, the Indians, the Chinese all meet together in Medina as members of one divine family, but they are clad in one dress every person in two simple pieces of white seamless cloth, one piece round the loin the other piece over the shoulders, bare head without pomp or ceremony, repeating “Here am I O God; at thy command; thou art one and alone; Here am I.” Thus there remains nothing to differentiate the high from the low and every pilgrim carries home the impression of the international significance of Islam.

In the opinion of Prof. Hurgronje “the league of nations founded by prophet of Islam put the principle of international unity of human brotherhood on such Universal foundations as to show candle to other nations.” In the words of same Professor “the fact is that no nation of the world can show a parallel to what Islam has done the realization of the idea of the League of Nations.”

The prophet of Islam brought the reign of democracy in its best form. The Caliph Caliph Ali and the son in-law of the prophet, the Caliph Mansur, Abbas, the son of Caliph Mamun and many other caliphs and kings had to appear before the judge as ordinary men in Islamic courts. Even today we all know how the black Negroes were treated by the civilized white races. Consider the state of BILAL, a Negro Slave, in the days of the prophet of Islam nearly 14 centuries ago. The office of calling Muslims to prayer was considered to be of status in the early days of Islam and it was offered to this Negro slave. After the conquest of Mecca, the Prophet ordered him to call for prayer and the Negro slave, with his black color and his thick lips, stood over the roof of the holy mosque at Mecca called the Ka’ba the most historic and the holiest mosque in the Islamic world, when some proud Arabs painfully cried loud, “Oh, this black Negro Slave, woe be to him. He stands on the roof of holy Ka’ba to call for prayer.” At that moment, the prophet announced to the world, this verse of the holy QURAN for the first time.

“O mankind, surely we have created you, families and tribes, so you may know one another.
Surely, the most honorable of you with God is MOST RIGHTEOUS AMONG you.
Surely, God is Knowing, Aware.”

And these words of the holy Quran created such a mighty transformation that the Caliph of Islam, the purest of Arabs by birth, offered their daughter in marriage to this Negro Slave, and whenever, the second Caliph of Islam, known to history as Umar the great, the commander of faithful, saw this Negro slave, he immediately stood in reverence and welcomed him by “Here come our master; Here come our lord.” What a tremendous change was brought by Quran in the Arabs, the proudest people at that time on the earth. This is the reason why Goethe, the greatest of German poets, speaking about the Holy Quran declared that, “This book will go on exercising through all ages a most potent influence.” This is also the reason why George Bernard Shaw says, “If any religion has a chance or ruling over England, say, Europe, within the next 100 years, it is Islam”.

Womens’ Rights
It is this same democratic spirit of Islam that emancipated women from the bondage of man. Sir Charles Edward Archibald Hamilton says “Islam teaches the inherent sinlessness of man. It teaches that man and woman and woman have come from the same essence, posses the same soul and have been equipped with equal capabilities for intellectual, spiritual and moral attainments.”

The Arabs had a very strong tradition that one who can smite with the spear and can wield the sword would inherit. But Islam came as the defender of the weaker sex and entitled women to share the inheritance of their parents. It gave women, centuries ago right of owning property, yet it was only 12 centuries later , in 1881, that England, supposed to be the cradle of democracy adopted this institution of Islam and the act was called “the married woman act”, but centuries earlier, the Prophet of Islam had proclaimed that “Woman are twin halves of men. The rights of women are sacred. See that women maintained rights granted to them.”

Law & Order & Humanity
Islam is not directly concerned with political and economic systems, but indirectly and in so far as political and economic affairs influence man’s conduct, it does lay down some very important principles to govern economic life. According to Prof. Massignon, it maintains the balance between exaggerated opposites and has always in view the building of character which is the basis of civilization. This is secured by its law of inheritance, by an organized system of charity known as Zakat, and by regarding as illegal all anti-social practices in the economic field like monopoly, usury, securing of predetermined unearned income and increments, cornering markets, creating monopolies, creating an artificial scarcity of any commodity in order to force the prices to rise. Gambling is illegal. Contribution to schools, to places of worship, hospitals, digging of wells, opening of orphanages are highest acts of virtue. Orphanages have sprung for the first time, it is said, under the teaching of the prophet of Islam. The world owes its orphanages to this prophet born an orphan. “Good all this” says Carlyle about Mohammad. “The natural voice of humanity, of pity and equity, dwelling in the heart of this wild son of nature, speaks.”

The Great Perfect Man
A historian once said a great man should be judged by three tests: Was he found to be of true metel by his contemporaries ? Was he great enough to raise above the standards of his age ? Did he leave anything as permanent legacy to the world at large ? This list may be further extended but all these three tests of greatness are eminently satisfied to the highest degree in case of prophet Mohammad. Some illustrations of the last two have already been mentioned.

The first is: Was the Prophet of Islam found to be of true metel by his contemporaries?

Historical records show that all the contemporaries of Mohammad both friends foes, acknowledged the sterling qualities, the spotless honesty, the noble virtues, the absolute sincerity and every trustworthiness of the apostle of Islam in all walks of life and in every sphere of human activity. Even the Jews and those who did not believe in his message, adopted him as the arbiter in their personal disputes by virtue of his perfect impartiality. Even those who did not believe in his message were forced to say “O Mohammad, we do not call you a liar, but we deny him who has given you a book and inspired you with a message.” They thought he was one possessed. They tried violence to cure him. But the best of them saw that a new light had dawned on him and they hastened him to seek the enlightenment. It is a notable feature in the history of prophet of Islam that his nearest relation, his beloved cousin and his bosom friends, who know him most intimately, were not thoroughly imbued with the truth of his mission and were convinced of the genuineness of his divine inspiration. If these men and women, noble, intelligent, educated and intimately acquainted with his private life had perceived the slightest signs of deception, fraud, earthliness, or lack of faith in him, Mohammad’s moral hope of regeneration, spiritual awakening, and social reform would all have been foredoomed to a failure and whole edifice would have crumbled to pieces in a moment. On the contrary, we find that devotion of his followers was such that he was voluntarily acknowledged as dictator of their lives. They braved for him persecutions and danger; they trusted, obeyed and honored him even in the most excruciating torture and severest mental agony caused by excommunication even unto death. Would this have been so, had they noticed the slightest backsliding in their master?

Cruelty, Perseverance & Sacrifice
Read the history of the early converts to Islam, and every heart would melt at the sight of the brutal treatment of innocent Muslim men and women.

Sumayya, an innocent women, is cruelly torn into pieces with spears. An example is made of “Yassir whose legs are tied to two camels and the beast were are driven in opposite directions”, Khabbab bin Arth is made lie down on the bed of burning coal with the brutal legs of their merciless tyrant on his breast so that he may not move and this makes even the fat beneath his skin melt. “Khabban bin Adi is put to death in a cruel manner by mutilation and cutting off his flesh piece-meal.” In the midst of his tortures, being asked whether he did not wish Mohammad in his place while he was in his house with his family, the sufferer cried out that he was gladly prepared to sacrifice himself his family and children and why was it that these sons and daughters of Islam not only surrendered to their prophet their allegiance but also made a gift of their hearts and souls to their master? Is not the intense faith and conviction on part of immediate followers of Mohammad, the noblest testimony to his sincerity and to his utter self-absorption in his appointed task?

And these men were not of low station or inferior mental caliber. Around him in quite early days, gathered what was best and noblest in Mecca, its flower and cream, men of position, rank, wealth and culture, and from his own kith and kin, those who knew all about his life. All the first four Caliphs, with their towering personalities, were converts of this period.
